Polarization control of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers by electro-optic birefringence

چکیده
Polarization of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers ~VCSELs! grown on ~001! GaAs substrate has been controlled by electro-optic birefringence. Birefringence was induced at the top distributed Bragg reflector by applying an electric field along the @001# direction. The cavity resonance of the polarized light along the @110# or @11̄0# direction shifted to shorter and longer wavelength, depending on the direction of the applied electric field. By varying the direction and strength of the electric field, we actively controlled the polarization of VCSELs. The dominant polarization mode occurred along the @110# direction for the negative electric field, and along the @11̄0# direction for the positive electric field. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0003-6951~00!04207-8#

New Approaches for Birefringence Tuning in Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers
Using the elasto-optic effect we increase the frequency difference between the two orthogonally polarized modes, the so-called birefringence splitting, in standard single-mode oxideconfined GaAs-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). The birefringence may play an important role in the realization of ultrafast polarization modulation for highspeed data transmission. For practica...
متن کاملPolarization selective symmetry breaking in the near-fields of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers
We study symmetries in multi-transverse-mode near-fields of circular vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs). The 0◦ polarized component of the near-field always has circular or high-order rotational symmetry, indicating that all significant optical properties of the laser are isotropic for light of that polarization. In contrast, the simultaneously present 90◦ polarized part of the sa...
متن کاملVertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers With Record-High Birefringence
VCSELs are used extensively today as transmitters in high-speed optical interconnects. A first generation of 28Gbit/s devices is currently being deployed. Although digital modulation at about 50Gbit/s has been shown [1], it is very unlikely that 100Gbit/s signals can be generated by direct current modulation. New approaches must thus be explored to satisfy the future demand for higher data thro...
متن کاملInvestigating the Polarization Properties of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers
Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are a new type of semiconductor laser that have emerged as an economical alternative to conventional edge-emitting lasers. Anisotropies within these lasers, such as birefringence and dichroism, cause their optical output to favor one of two orthogonal linear polarizations; however, other optical outputs such as elliptical polarization and polariz...
متن کاملPolarization and transverse mode selection in birefringent Vertical-Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers
Calculations are reported of the eeect of birefringence on the selection of polarization states for the case of a weakly index guided Vertical-Cavity Surface Emitting Laser supporting both a fundamental and a higher-order transverse mode. The innuence of the refraction index step of the waveguide on the polarization behaviour of the laser is elucidated. It is found that for large refraction ind...
